episode one of new moon new music - wintergrass february 2004

in the intro we are introduced as the following performance being
only the second time we'd played together--- me (acoustic guitar),
kenny malone (snare drum), nick forster (mandola & vx.)& john
cowan (electric bass & vx.) -- and it is true -- over the years i
had played a bit w/ nick, a bit more w/ john & a bit more w/
kenny--(as trio, john, nick & i had done 2 gigs in calif. that same
week) but as the 4 of us that was our second set-- the first was only 2
hours prior at another location at wintergrass (held in tacoma,
washington- one of my favorite festivals to play) :an indoor bluegrass
fest that takes place in winter, months from the last festival in the
previous fall & from the festival season still to come-- trust me,
that means the fans are HUNGRY for their winter fix on this kind of
music-- so, our second set ever was at the church there -- we
got there w/ minutes to set up -- we made the call to not play "plugged
in" w/ amps & full drum kit- so this was us w/ one gig under our
belts & facing a full house of people & the decision to go for
it -- no set list-- totally flying -- the sound was great in the house
(matt stearns) & this was recorded

by fred forssell and matt gephart -- arrangements while
you wait, set list while you wait, sound mixing while you wait - magic
- we (the audience & the crew & players) were all stunned
afterwards like, "damn, did that actually happen?" special thanks to
stephen ruffo of wintergrass and of course, the fearless kenny, nick
& john -- and thanks to the guy who brought up the guitar at the
end for nick on "head south"
