NEW MOON | NEW MUSIC - Episode Nine - Fireman's Kitchen - Hickory, NC circa 1995
Episode Nine is available here.
fireman's kitchen in hickory, nc. sometime in this millineum
- i think i played more shows for acoustic stage at the kitchen for bill bost
than anyone else (but i may have tied w/ jerry douglas)- when i first
started, i had 2 places that would have me play-- this was before i
even put out a record--- one was the down home in johnson city, tn.
& the other was fireman's kitchen in hickory
after digging
this one out of archival dust & listening to it, i realized the
reason i played there so much: the folks in hickory at that venue were
the best audience i ever played to (outside of my playing in prisons
when i was a kid-- i played the prison/i did not live there)- these
hickory folks were educated by merlefest & wncw and led by bill
bost bringing the goods to them
what i hear is me being so
relaxed for them that i would will & did try anything- if they
requested it, i did it - whether i knew it or not- also, the other
thing i hear is that i played q u i e t (ly)- small room, small PA-
just me- i was within spitting distance (front row remember??) so, why
scream? just sing man! so i did-- and i played-- i notice i played a
little more bluegrassish there too (wncw/merlefest again)-- bottom
line: great listeners & music lovers make performers put IT out
better - shows are a 2way street, folks--wanna get the best out of your
musicians? pay very close attention to the sounds they make
so,
here is a board tape & to my ear, sounds like a comp. of several
nites (at least 2) one night distorted/one night not- but truth is i
played there a few dozen nights over the years since probably 95 or
96-so i do not know when this is--- some songs here i have not even
recorded or released- but shhhhh, don't tell the tapers
enjoy episode nine of new moon new music
