Long Ride Home  A Crooked Road  Modern Hymns  The Invisible Man  Real Time  Live In NC  Theatre of the Unheard  Family Tree  Aloha from Nashville  Wayne Scott - This Weary Way
Long Ride Home
2012
this album is dedicated to my mother, born evelyn jeree gilbert - tedders, kentucky: 1934 - 2011

i grew up in, on & with real country music - my parents were more than fans - they were born in depression-era-tobacco-farm-kentucky, when country music was the journal of such folks - saturday night opry listening, sunday morning churching & working dirt hard at all other times

from silver haired daddy to momma's hungry eyes, i was baptized in country music

if you were in the house, car or truck with my mom or dad you were hearing country music too - there was nothing else - my dad played it through our family pa system at concert level volumes on sunday mornings to wake us up - we (my brothers & i) played it in kitchens, living rooms, to churches & later on to honky tonks

- i got my first instrument at 6 years old at a Nashville pawn shop on broadway just down from the opry as we took our first vacation, EVER (and then for years to come) to worship at the mother church for these 2 kentuckians & their boys

this home-made record was a pleasure - i centered the band around hargus "pig" robbins - (hear this recording & you will know why) dennis crouch - (dennis is the best we have, having made a study of moore & the huskeys & still making it all his own) kenny malone - groove & friendship to their fullest expression

then i invited more friends over: guy clark, my dad: wayne scott, rodney crowell, patty griffin, tim oíbrien, john cowan, lloyd green, charlie mccoy, mickey raphael, marcus hummon, jonell mosser & kathy chiavola - with the sounds recorded by stephanie hudacek-bates, stephen lotz & matt mangano then finished off, mixed & mastered, by ray kennedy

these songs have been sitting around for awhile- two from as far back as when i was 16 (co-writes with my dad, wayne) right up to my first years in nashville - to me, songs do not have a short shelf life - unless you say so or are ashamed of them

it's a long ride home, sometimes; and well worth the journey once you get there

- mom would have loved this record

Track Listing:

IT MUST BE SUNDAY FOR A MAN TO FEEL THIS BLUE
IíM THINKING ABOUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS
AND A WOMAN I HAD GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO
MOST FOLKS ARE DOWN IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
LEARNING ABOUT THE GOLDEN RULE
BUT EVEN JESUS COULDNíT HELP ME TODAY
PRAISE BE TO LONELINESS, IT MUST BE SUNDAY

IT MUST BE SUNDAY SHE DONíT ANSWER HER PHONE
I LET IT RING A THOUSAND TIMES
I GUESS YOUíD SAY THERE WAS NOBODY HOME
I ASKED THE LANDLORD IF HE KNEW
ABOUT THE GIRL IN 302
HE SAID, ďYEA THE GIRL JUST UP AND MOVED AWAYĒ
PRAISE BE TO LONELINESS, IT MUST BE SUNDAY

ITíS BEEN A MONTH OF SUNDAYS SINCE SHE SAID GOODBYE
THIRTY DAYS OF GRIEVING TEARS IN MY EYES, I CANíT SEE,
WHATíS BECOME OF ME?

TOMORROWíS MONDAY MAYBE WORKíLL PULL ME THROUGH
IF I KEEP MY HANDS REAL BUSY
GIVE ME HEART A CHANCE TO NOT THINK OF YOU
BUT TOMORROW COMES AND THEN AGAIN
MAYBE IíLL JUST CALL IT IN, YOU KNOW
THEY CAN DO WITHOUT ME ANYWAY
PRAISE BE TO LONELINESS
IT MUST BE SUNDAY

IT MUST BE SUNDAY

IF YOU CANíT FIND WORK, WORK FINDS YOU
YOU KNOW DADDY DIDNíT RAISE NO WELFARE FOOL
SAID, ĎTHEREíS A LOT WORSE THINGS A BOY COULD DO
THAN STRADDLE AN IRON BEAM.í
SO I BUILD THIS BRIDGE ĎTIL ITíS COMPLETE
AND IíLL TAKE THE STEEL TOES OFF MY FEET
AND GIVE MYSELF A ONE WAY SEAT ON THAT TRAIN TO HOPKINSVILLE

IíM GOING BACK TO HOPKINSVILLE
IíM GOING BACK YOU KNOW I WILL
ONLY 21 WORKING DAYS UNTIL
IíM WITH MY LOVE IN HOPKINSVILLE

ON MY DAY OFF I PULL THE BLINDS
SO THE FOREMAN WONíT SEE MY TASTE FOR THE WINE
AND I DRINK UNTIL THE SUN DONíT SHINE
AND I SIT AND DRINK SOME MORE
I MIGHT CALL THE BOYS AND DEAL A HAND
I MAY GO TO TOWN TO HEAR A COUNTRY BAND
AND LIE ABOUT WHAT WE GOT PLANNED
WHEN WE GET OFF OF THAT BRIDGE

IíM GOING BACK TO HOPKINSVILLE
IíM GOING BACK YOU KNOW I WILL
ONLY 21 WORKING DAYS UNTIL
IíM WITH MY LOVE IN HOPKINSVILLE

THIS WELDING HOOD IS MIGHTY DARK
YOU CAN SEE THE SUN AND THE WELDING SPARKS
AND IT SOUNDS GOOD SINGING OLE JOE CLARK
LONG AS NOBODY ELSE CAN HEAR
AND IT FITS MY HEAD, FITS MY FACE
AND IT HOLDS MY WELDING GLOVES IN PLACE
ITS BEEN KNOWN TO HIDE THE TRACE OF A LONELY MAN CRYING

IíM GOING BACK TO HOPKINSVILLE
IíM GOING BACK YOU KNOW I WILL
ONLY 21 WORKING DAYS UNTIL
IíM WITH MY LOVE IN HOPKINSVILLE (THATíS RIGHT)

SITTING ON THE FENDER OF SOMEONE ELSEíS TRUCK
DRINKING OLD CROW WHISKEY & HOT 7UP
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

YOU CAN HEAR THE BAND PLAYING RIGHT THROUGH THE WALL
AND THERE AINíT NO COVER CHARGE AINíT NO LAST CALL
OUT THE PARKING LOT

NOW THEREíS A COUPLE OF COWPOKES PUTTIN' UP THEIR DUKES
THERE WASNíT MUCH TO IT AFTER BOTH OF THEM PUKED
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

SOMEONE CALLED THE POLICE AND THE POLICE FINALLY CAME
THEY WROTE EM A COUPLE OF TICKETS AND TOOK A COUPLE OF NAMES
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

I LOVE TO SEE THE NEON DANCING ON THE GRAVEL
I LOVE TO HEAR THE PICKUP TRUCKS COME UNRAVELED
SOME ARE GIVING UP, SOME ARE GIVING IN
LOOKS LIKE EVERYBODYíS LOOKING FOR A FRIEND
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

WHOOPS, THEREíS A COUPLE WHO COULD NOT WAIT TO GET HOME
AH THEYíRE PROBABLY IN LOVE SO LETS LEAVE THEM ALONE
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

THE BAND IS ON THE BUS THEYíRE ALL LOADED UP TO LEAVE
AND THE DRUMMERíS GOT A GIRLFRIEND TUGGING AT HIS SLEEVE
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

I LOVE TO SEE THE NEON DANCING ON THE GRAVEL
I LOVE TO HEAR THE PICKUP TRUCKS COME UNRAVELED
SOME ARE GIVING UP, SOME ARE GIVING IN
LOOKS LIKE EVERYBODYíS LOOKING FOR A FRIEND
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

NOW EVERYBODYíS GONE THEYíVE SHOT OUT ALL THE LIGHTS
THE DUST BEGINS TO SETTLE AND ITíS NEVER BEEN SO QUIET
OUT IN THE PARKING LOT

I AM GROUNDED OH, BUT I HAVE WINGS TO FLY
I DONíT USE EM , I JUST LOOK UP IN THE SKY
I KEEP THEM HIDDEN BOUND UP IN A COAT AND TIE
ĎTIL THE WORLD IS READY FOR A MAN WITH WINGS TO FLY

AND I WILL FLY SOMEDAY
IíLL BREAK THESE FEET OF CLAY
AND IíLL BE ON MY WAY, MY WAY

I AM FEELING THOUGH I DO NOT SHED A TEAR
MY EYES ARE DUSTY, THOUGH I HAVE FACED MY FEAR OF FEARS
I AM SHAKEN BY THE COMING ON OF YEARS
I AM A FEELING MAN BUT I CAN NOT SHED A TEAR

BUT I WILL CRY SOMEDAY
IíLL BREAK THESE EYES OF CLAY
AND IíLL BE ON MY WAY, MY WAY
SOMEDAY

I AM LOVING THOUGH I MAKE MY BED ALONE
IíVE HAD LOVERS BUT I HAVE NO ONE OF MY OWN
BUT I COULD FEED HER FROM THE GARDEN I HAVE GROWN
I AM A LOVING MAN BUT I MAKE MY BED ALONE

AND I WILL LOVE SOMEDAY
I WILL BREAK THIS HEART OF CLAY
YEAH AND IíLL BE ON MY WAY, MY WAY
AND I WILL LOVE SOMEDAY
IíLL BREAK THESE FEET AND THESE EYES AND THIS HEART OF CLAY
AND IíLL BE ON MY WAY, MY WAY
SOMEDAY, SOMEDAY

THEREíS NO USE LIVING FOR TODAY
THEREíS NO USE LIVING FOR TODAY
WELL TODAY WAS ONCE TOMORROW
AND TODAYíS TOMORROWSí YESTERDAY
THEREíS NO USE LIVING FOR TODAY

THE GIRL I LOVE IS UP AND GONE
THE GIRL I LOVE IS UP AND GONE
SHE LEFT YESTERDAY MORNING
AND BY SUPPER TIME I HAD A BRAND NEW SONG
THE GIRL I LEFT IS UP AND GONE

THE CAT IS SCRATCHING AT MY DOOR
GOT A BIG BLACK CAT AND HEíS SCRATCHING AT MY DOOR
HE RUNS BY ME KIND OF FUNNY CAUSE IíVE NEVER LET HIM IN BEFORE
THE CAT IS SCRATCHING AT MY DOOR

EVERYBODY NEEDS SOME TIME AWAY
(DONíT YOU THINK?)
EVERYBODY NEEDS A LITTLE BIT OF TIME AWAY
SHEíLL ONLY BE GONE FOR THE WEEKEND
BUT IT FEELS LIKE SUNDAY EVERY
EVERYBODY NEEDS SOME TIME AWAY

SHEíS COMING IN ON THE 1209
MY BABYíS COMING ON THE 1209
SHE WILL ASK ME ABOUT THE WEEKEND
AND IíLL LIE AND TELL HER IT WAS FINE
SHEíLL BE COMING IN ON THE 1209

THEREíS NO USE LIVING FOR TODAY
THEREíS NO USE LIVING FOR TODAY

THEREíS A SADNESS AND IíVE HEARD IN THE BREEZE
THEREíS A SORROW IN THE FALLING OF THE LEAVES
THEREíS AN EMPTINESS WHEN YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE ALONE
IíM SO GLAD MY LONELY DAYS AND NIGHTS ARE GONE

NOW AND THEN SOMEONE SPECIAL COMES ALONG
NOW AND THEN SOMEONE BRINGS YOUR LIFE A SONG
NOW ITíS LOVE IM HEARING IN THE MORNING BREEZE
YOUíRE EVERYTHING I WANTED LOVE TO BE

AND IíLL LOVE YOU TIL THE CLOSING OF OUR DAYS
AND IíLL NEED YOU THROUGH THE VALLEYS AND THE SHADOWS
AND THE HIGHWAYS
AND WEíLL PUT OUR FEET UPON THE PATH OF LIFE
AND ITSí BYWAYS

AND IN THE MORNING WHEN I WAKE UP BY YOUR SIDE
IN THE EVENINGS AS WE STAND AGAINST THE TIDES
EVERY HOUR THAT YOUíRE WITH ME, I CAN SEE
YOUíRE EVERYTHING I WANTED LOVE TO BE

AND IíLL LOVE YOU TIL THE CLOSING OF OUR DAYS
AND IíLL NEED YOU THROUGH THE VALLEYS AND THE SHADOWS
AND THE HIGHWAYS
AND WEíLL PUT OUR FEET UPON THE PATH OF LIFE
AND ITSí BYWAYS

IN THE MORNING WHEN I WAKE UP BY YOUR SIDE
IN THE EVENINGS AS WE STAND AGAINST THE TIDES

I SAW THE CURTAIN MOVE
I SAW THE HAND THAT PULLED THE SHADE
AND IN A MOMENT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT
AND A RADIO BEGAN TO PLAY
AND I CROSSED THE EMPTY STREET
WITH THE WINDOW IN MY VIEW
BUT I COULDNíT SEE THROUGH
TO WATCH THEM DANCE IN THE DARKNESS
THEN ROUND THE CORNER
CAME THIS OLD MANíS SHUFFLING FEET
AND I BUMMED HIM FOR A CIGARETTE
AND HE HANDS THE WHOLE DAMN PACK TO ME
AND HE SAID, ďIVE WATCHED YOU FOR THE LAST SIX NIGHTS
AND BROTHER WHY DO YOU WANT TO BLEED?
I GUESS YOU JUST CANíT SHAKE THE NEED
TO WATCH THEM DANCE IN THE DARKNESSĒ

UP THERE AN ANGELíS FALLING
UP THERE CANíT YOU HEAR HIM CALLING OUT HER NAME
CAN YOU FEEL THEM TOUCH?
CAN YOU HEAR THEM BREATHE?
UP THERE TIME AINíT MOVING
UP THERE NO ONEíS LOSING ANY SLEEP
FOR FOOLS LIKE US, TWO FOOLS LIKE US
DOWN HERE ON THE STREET

I SAID, ďWAIT A MINUTE MISTER
MAN, YOU JUST DONíT UNDERSTAND
SHE WAS EVERYTHING I EVER WANTEDĒ
AND THE OLD MAN HE JUST HELD OUT HIS HAND
AND SAID, ďWELCOME TO THE ONE PLACE
NO ONE EVER WANTS TO BE
WHERE EVEN IN YOUR DREAMS
YOU WATCH THEM DANCE IN THE DARKNESSĒ

UP THERE AN ANGELíS FALLING
UP THERE CANíT YOU HEAR THEM CALLING OUT HER NAME
CAN YOU FEEL THEM TOUCH
CAN YOU HEAR THEM BREATHE
UP THERE TIME AINíT MOVING

WHEN FIRST I TOOK THE RING OFF
I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE
ANOTHER RING JUST UNDERNEATH
AS WHITE AS SNOW CAN BE
THROUGH RICH AND POOR, SICKNESS AND HEALTH
UNTIL THE DAY WE DIE
OH, THE DAY I TOOK THE RING OFF
I LAY RIGHT DOWN AND CRIED

OH MOTHER IF YOUíRE LISTENING
PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR ME
I LOVE A LOVELY LADY
FROM THE GREEN HILLS OF TENNESSEE
I KNOW JESUS LOVES A SINNER
HE MUST LOVE ME MOST OF ALL
TELL BRENDA I AM SORRY
BUT THEREíS NO LOVE FOR ME IN ARKANSAS
NO LOVE IN ARKANSAS

THAT MISSISSIPPI RIVER
ITíS MUDDY AND ITíS WIDE
AND YOU CANíT SEE WHAT YOUíRE LEAVING
ĎTIL YOU LOOK BACK FROM THE OTHER SIDE
AND THERE I SAW THE YEARS IíD SPENT
AND ALL THE YEARS IíD LEFT TO GO
I TOOK THAT RING FROM MY FINGER
AND THROUGH IT IN THE MUDDY MISSISSIPPI RIVER DOWN BELOW

OH MOTHER IF YOUíRE LISTENING
PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR ME
I LOVE A LOVELY LADY
FROM THE GREEN HILLS OF TENNESSEE
I KNOW JESUS LOVES A SINNER
HE MUST LOVE ME MOST OF ALL
TELL BRENDA I AM SORRY
BUT THEREíS NO LOVE FOR ME IN ARKANSAS

DID YOU EVER HAVE A NICKEL
AND WISH YOU HAD A DIME?
DID YOU EVER TRY TO SEARCH YOUR SOUL
BUT COULD NOT FIND YOUR MIND?

DID YOU EVER LAY YOUR BODY DOWN
WITH SOMEONE THAT DONíT LOVE YOU?
THE COUNTRY BOY HAS BEEN THERE
THATíS WHAT MAKES HIM SING THE BLUES

ITíS NOT THE DRINKS YOU BOUGHT HIM
ITíS NOT THE TIPS YOU GAVE
FROM THE ROCKING OF HIS CRADLE
TO THE COVERING OF HIS GRAVE
YOUíLL NEVER KNOW THE LONELINESS AND SORROW HE GOES THROUGH
THE COUNTRY BOY HAS BEEN THERE
THATíS WHAT MAKES HIM SING THE BLUES

WHEN HE SINGS ABOUT A LOVE GONE WRONG
THEREíS NO TEARS IN HIS EYES
BUT THE LONELY KNOWS HEíS CRYING OUT
ALL THE HURT HE FEELS INSIDE

HE ĎS SINGING TO THEIR BROKEN HEARTS
THATíS ALL THATíS LEFT TO DO
THE COUNTRY BOY HAS BEEN THERE
THATíS WHAT MAKES HIM SING THE BLUES

ITíS NOT THE DRINKS YOU BOUGHT HIM
ITíS NOT THE TIPS YOU GAVE
FROM THE ROCKING OF HIS CRADLE
TO THE COVERING OF HIS GRAVE

THERE WAS NO DENYING THE FIRE IN HIS EYES
IT WAS MORE THAN PUEBLO WHISKEY
IT WAS MORE THAN A LONELY NIGHT
TWO HUNDRED MILES FROM HOME
PERFECTLY ALONE

HE HAD NO APOLOGIES IN HIS POCKET
IT WAS RIGHT THERE ON HIS HAND
A GOLDEN WEDDING BAND
WHEN HEARTS BEGAN TO POUND
HE STOOD HIS GROUND

SHE LIGHTS A CANDLE FOR A COWBOY
AND WONDERS WHY SHEíS SO ALONE
HE WAS A MAN OF HIS WORD
IT WAS ONE SHEíD NEVER HEARD
HE WAS THE ONLY MAN WHO EVER SAID, NO

SHE SAID, ďIS THERE NOTHING I CAN DO TO PLEASE YOU?Ē
HE SAID, ďGIRL, YOU MAKE LOVE SOUND SO EASY
AND ITíS HARD TO TURN AWAY
BUT ITíS HARDER TO STAY
AND EITHER WAY I GO,
OH ITíS GONNA BE A LONG RIDE HOMEĒ

SHE LIGHTS A CANDLE FOR A COWBOY
AND WONDERS WHY SHES SO ALONE
HE WAS A MAN OF HIS WORD
IT WAS ONE SHEíD NEVER HEARD
HE WAS THE ONLY MAN WHO EVER SAID, NO NO NO

AND AS HE WALKED OUT THE DOOR
SHE LOVED HIM ALL THE MORE

SHE LIGHTS A CANDLE FOR A COWBOY
AND WONDERS WHY SHEíS STILL ALONE, (STILL ALONE)
HE WAS A MAN OF HIS WORD
IT WAS ONE SHEíD NEVER HEARD
HE WAS THE ONLY MAN WHO EVER SAID
OH , HE WAS THE ONLY MAN WHO EVER SAID, NO

PLAYING ĎCROSS THE COUNTRY WITH A 5-PIECE BAND
IíM JUST TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING WITH A GUITAR IN MY HAND
IíVE SEEN NEW YORK CITY SKYLINE AND IíVE FELT THE LA BLUES
AND IíVE WORKED EVER BAR FROM HERE TO SASKATOON

I STAY IN 2 BIT HOTELS IN THE CITIES WHERE I ROAM
BUT IíVE NEVER LAID MY BODY DOWN IN ONE THAT FELT LIKE HOME
I GUESS HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
AND MY HEARTíS HOME WITH YOU
STILL AFTER YEARS OF CHASING RAINBOWS
EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU

EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU
THOUGH YOU SOMETIMES FEEL NEGLECTED
THEREíS NOTHING THAT MEANS AS MUCH TO ME AS YOU
BUT I WAS BORN TO SING THE BLUES
AND EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU

LAST NIGHT WE WORKED IN DENVER
I GUESS WE PUT ON QUITE A SHOW
BUT I LEFT THE HOTEL RESTLESS WITH NOWHERE TO GO
I WALK THROUGH SNOWY CITY SIDEWALKS
THROUGH THE SILENT AVENUES
AND AS THE SUN CAME UP I REALIZED
EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU

EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU
THOUGH YOU SOMETIMES FEEL NEGLECTED
THEREíS NOTHING THAT MEANS AS MUCH TO ME AS YOU
BUT I WAS BORN TO SING THE BLUES
AND EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU

I GUESS IíLL ALWAYS SING THESE BLUES
BUT EVERY ROAD LEADS BACK TO YOU

IN A BAR, IN A HOTEL, IN ATLANTA, DOWNTOWN
HES A LONG WAY FROM HOME
AND HES POURINí íEM DOWN
THEREíS A LADY IN WAITING
A WARM MIDNIGHT FRIEND
OH, BUT ITíS THAT SWEET SOUTHERN COMFORT AGAIN

ITíS COOL CONVERSATION
ITíS COURAGE IN A GLASS
HE DONíT TELL HER HEíS MARRIED
AND SHE DONíT EVEN ASK
THEREíS JUST LIVING FOR THE MOMENT
LET THE GOOD TIMES BEGIN
HE GOT TOO CLOSE TO COMFORT AGAIN

SWEET SOUTHERN COMFORT
CROSSING THE LINE
LYING WITH STRANGERS ONE MORE LAST TIME
CHEATING IS A GAME WHERE NOBODY WINS
HE GOT TOO CLOSE TO COMFORT AGAIN

WITH THE RING ON HIS FINGER
HE HOLDS THE DOOR WIDE
AND THEREíS NO HESITATING AS THEY BOTH STEP INSIDE
TO LAY DOWN AN IMPRESSION THATíS SWEETER THAN SIN
OH, BUT ITíS THAT SWEET, SWEET SOUTHERN COMFORT AGAIN

AND HE LOOKS IN THE MIRROR IN THE COLD MORNING LIGHT
AND HE STARES AT A YOUNG MAN WITH AGE IN HIS EYES
HE STARTED THIS DANCE BUT THE SONG HAS NO END
HE GOT TOO CLOSE TO COMFORT AGAIN

SWEET SOUTHERN COMFORT
AND CROSSING THE LINE
LYING WITH STRANGERS ONE MORE LAST TIME
SHE IS A GAME WHERE NOBODY WINS
NO HE GOT TOO CLOSE TO COMFORT AGAIN

TAKE THIS RESTLESS HOBOíS HEART
TAKE THIS DREAMER WITHOUT DREAMS
TAKE THE SADNESS WITH THE LOVE
TAKE THE LOVE WITH EVERYTHING
LIKE YOUíVE STOOD THROUGH IT ALL
YOUíRE STILL STANDING HERE TODAY
AND IíVE KNOWN IT ALL ALONG
YOUíLL BE WITH ME ALL THE WAY

THOUGH THE TIMES HAVE BEEN HARD
AND THE PLEASURES QUICKLY GONE
BUT AS WE PASSED TROUGH THE SHADOWS BABY
YOU KEPT SHINING ON AND ON
LIKE A RIVER OVERFLOWING
YOU HAVE CARRIED ME AWAY
AND ITíS YOUR LOVE THAT YOU KEEP SHOWING
YOUíLL BE WITH ME ALL THE WAY

TAKE THIS MESSAGE TO MY MOTHER
SAY HER RAMBLING BOY IS HOME
WONíT YOU TELL HER TO BE HAPPY NOW
IíLL NO LONGER BE ALONE
TAKE THE PICTURES SHE WILL GIVE YOU
FROM A TIME SO FAR AWAY
AND WONíT YOU TELL HER AS YOUíRE LEAVING

TIME IS SLOWLY TICKING, TAKING ALL OUR YOUTH
BEELZEBUB AND CHOSEN ONE HAVE BOTH BEEN IN CAHOOTS
THEY PLAY US LIKE GIN RUMMY AND THEYíRE CHEATING ON THE SIDE
WHILE WE GAZE INTO A BROKEN MIRROR LIKE FRANKENSTEINíS BRIDE
I WISH SOMEONE COULD TELL ME SOMETHING I DONíT ALREADY KNOW
ITíS BEEN SOME HARD LIVING, STILL GOT A WAYS TO GO

ROOSTER IN THE HEN HOUSE HIT MAN ON THE PHONE
LOW MAN ON THE TOTEM POLE CANíT GET NO TIME ALONE
IíVE BEEN SEEKING SATISFACTION FOR THIS GNAWING IN MY SOUL
I BUILD A HOUSE LIKE ANDREW JACKSON IF THAT WERE MY ONLY GOAL
IíM LOOKING FOR A CHANGE TO COME BUT, BROTHER, CHANGE COMES SLOW
AND ITíS BEEN SOME HARD LIVING, STILL GOT A WAYS TO GO, HO HO HO

I LOOK OUTSIDE AT THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY
SUN IS SHINING LIGHTING UP MY WAY
I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE AND GET ME A FISHING POLE
ITíS BEEN SOME HARD LIVING AND I STILL GOT A WAYS TO GO

I PONTIFICATE, I SUFFOCATE, I OVERATE (MY MY)
IíVE BEEN WEARILY, SINCERELY, TOO LONESOME NOW TO CRY
GAWKING, SQUAWKING, TALKING FROM A PATENT LEATHER COUCH
WORKING THROUGH MY CHILDISH HOOD
BEYOND THE SHADOWS AND THE DOUBTS
OH YE OF LITTLE CONSEQUENCE PLEASE CAST THAT FIRST PRECIOUS STONE
CAUSE ITíS BEEN SOME HARD, HARD LIVING AND I STILL GOT A WAYS TO GO

I LOOK OUTSIDE AND ITíS STARTING TO RAIN
ĎROUND THE CURVE COMES A PASSENGER TRAIN
NORTHBOUND FREIGHT ON A SOUTH BOUND TRACK
YEA, SHEíS ALRIGHT LEAVING BUT SHE WONT BE COMING BACK

I LOOK OUTSIDE AT THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY
SUN IS SHINING MAN ITS LIGHTING UP MY WAY
I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE AND GET ME A FISHING POLE
ITíS BEEN SOME HARD LIVING AND I STILL GOT A WAYS TO GO
